UNESCO General Conference: landmark global agreements expected on Artificial Intelligence and Open Science as the agency celebrates its 75th anniversary

The UNESCO General Conference - starting tomorrow - will mark the Organization’s 75th anniversary. 

Several important decisions are expected from UNESCO’s 193 Member States, in particular on cultural heritage, on global education policy, on the ethics surrounding technology and the vital need for greater openness around scientific research. 

A special ceremony will be organized and broadcast live from UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris on the 12th of November (starting at 3.30 pm), to celebrate the Organization’s 75th birthday. Heads of state will attend as well as internationally renowned artists. Further details about this event will soon be published on a dedicated website.

The General Conference is also expected to adopt several global frameworks for setting standards on key issues:

The Recommendation on Open Science This policy would facilitate greater international cooperation on allowing universal access to scientific knowledge.  

The Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial IntelligenceThis agreement would create the ever first global guidelines on the ethics of the development and deployment of artificial intelligence
