How the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Programme Changed the Course of My Life
When I received the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Sub-Saharan Africa award, I knew it was a significant recognition. What I did not fully realize was how deeply it would transform every part of my professional and personal journey. That award was not just a milestone. It became the turning point that opened international opportunities, connected me to a powerful network of women scientists and helped me discover my voice as both a researcher and a mentor.
Recently, I had the privilege of representing this community at the 14th UNESCO Youth Forum in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It was a gathering of vibrant, driven youth from across the world, each contributing to critical conversations about the future of science, education and sustainability.
I was honored to be part of the leadership team, which included the Steering Committee, moderators and rapporteurs. This role allowed me to take on meaningful responsibilities, from guiding dialogue and facilitating sessions to ensuring key voices were heard and captured. It gave me the chance to engage more actively, contribute strategically and connect deeply with peers who are already shaping change on the ground.
I never imagined that my journey in science would one day take me to Uzbekistan. Visiting Samarkand was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the richness of its culture, the warmth of its people and the deep sense of history that lives in every street and structure. Walking through centuries-old madrasas and vibrant marketplaces, I felt a profound connection to the past and an even stronger sense of what global collaboration can look like in the present. Uzbekistan surprised me in every way. It reminded me that some of the most transformative experiences come from places we never expected to reach. I return with lasting memories, cultural appreciation and a deep gratitude for the chance to witness such beauty and heritage firsthand.
What struck me most was the sincerity and courage in every voice. Young participants shared real challenges and bold ideas with honesty. In listening, learning and speaking with them, I was reminded that science is not isolated from society. It is embedded in every decision, every policy and every future we are building together.
After I gave my speech, many attendees approached me with questions. They wanted to know how I reached this stage, what L’Oréal-UNESCO meant in my journey and how they too could find support. Some told me that hearing my story helped them reconsider pursuing research or applying for a PhD. It was a powerful reminder that stories matter. And representation matters even more.
The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Programme gave me more than funding or recognition. It gave me visibility. It helped me publish with international collaborators, carry out advanced research and earn a postdoctoral fellowship at Yonsei University, ranked among the top 50 universities globally in the 2025 QS World University Rankings. It continues to shape how others perceive my work and how I see myself. Most importantly, it gave me confidence. That confidence now allows me to support others.
At the forum, I was invited to join new networks focused on climate action and youth mentorship. I formed connections with science communicators and change agents who are working across sectors to bring science to the heart of public life. I left Samarkand not just inspired, but ready to act with renewed energy.
I am proud to be part of a program that does not only celebrate women in science but empowers them to lead, teach and build. To every young woman wondering whether she belongs in this space, I want to say: YOU DO. This platform helped me believe that. Now I carry it forward by helping others believe the same.
