Science, a pillar of sustainable food systems development in Latin America and the Caribbean

A new activity aims to address food systems issues through science, as well as increasing resilience, adapting to climate change, and providing alternatives for rural livelihoods and more nutritious diets.

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is known to be a region rich in biodiversity and biological resources, yet much remains to be done for the establishment of alternative non-fossil and knowledge-based bioeconomy pathways.

The virtual side event Bioeconomy for biodiversity and the development of science-based sustainable food systems in Latin America and the Caribbean will take place, free and open, on 6 July 2021, in the framework of the initiative Science Days for the UN Food Systems Summit (organised, also in virtual mode by the UN Food Systems Summit 2021 Science Group). The proposal is aimed at public policy practitioners, academics and private sector representatives.

 The focus will be on the challenges for the conservation, knowledge, restoration and sustainable use of biodiversity resources, as well as on food systems issues, increasing resilience, adaptation to climate change, provision of alternatives for rural livelihoods and more nutritious diets. The need for stronger sustained policies, incentives and governance will be discussed, along with opportunities for new business models related to food systems.
