Empowering Women in Science (WiS) in Africa
Africa’s future is closely tied to science and technology, yet women and girls, who make up over half of the continent’s 1.55 billion people, remain underrepresented in STEM, often accounting for less than 30% of researchers.
The Empowering Women in Science (WiS) Continental Virtual Dialogue , taking place on 27 November 2025, is a one-day, high-level event designed to address this gap. It will bring together ministers, global partners, and leading women scientists to showcase talent, build political momentum, and turn commitments from frameworks like the Addis Ababa STEM Communiqué, STISA-2034, and UNESCO Priority Africa into practical action.
The dialogue will focus on raising the profile of African women scientists, translating high-level commitments into actionable policies, and mobilizing partnerships and resources. A dedicated virtual marketplace will connect participants to funding, mentorship, and career opportunities, creating direct pathways for professional growth.
Expected outcomes include Continental Priorities for Gender Equity in STI, the African Women in Science Action Compact (2025–2026), a new digital networking platform, and coordinated outreach to amplify women scientists’ achievements.
Serving as a foundation for the 2026 Continental Women in Science Conference, the event sets the stage for lasting impact, ensuring more women help shape Africa’s scientific landscape, and that science helps shape Africa’s future.
