Summary

Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, and an Adjunct Researcher at the School of Pharmacy, New Giza University. Also served as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre in Canada, where she collaborated on NIH-funded projects exploring hepatitis C virus immunity and vaccine design.

Prof. Abdeltawab earned her PhD in Immunogenetics from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2010, where her work focused on genetic pathways that modulate susceptibility to streptococcal sepsis. Following this, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cincinnati, applying systems biology to host–pathogen interactions and infectious disease susceptibility.

Nourtan’s research spans host–pathogen interactions, vaccine development and adjuvant systems, pharmacogenetics of infectious diseases, and antimicrobial resistance. Currently, she serves as the Cairo site Principal Investigator on an NIH (NIAID, U19) international project on correlates of protective immunity to HCV, in collaboration with partners at CRCHUM (Canada) and Emory University (USA).

She has been honored with the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Rising Talent Award (2015), the Levant and Egypt Fellowship (2014), and the Cairo University Encouragement Award (2018). She was also recognized among the Top 50 Women Performing in Egypt by Amwal Al Ghad magazine in 2016.

In addition to her research, she is actively engaged in academic leadership, scientific societies, and service — including reviewing for international funding bodies and fellowships such as the Newton-Mosharafa Fund and the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Egypt program.

Dr Abdeltawab’s overarching goal is to integrate research in microbiology, immunology, and pharmacogenetics to advance innovative strategies for preventing and treating infectious diseases — particularly viral infections like HCV and multi-drug resistant bacteria.

• Postdoctoral Training: o Mapped quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with differential host responses to Ebola and Shiga-toxin producing E. coli. (Zumbrun EE et al., 2012; Russo LM et al., 2015) (complete list below) -Performed studies towards elucidating the role and mechanism of prostaglandin E2 in modulating host differential susceptibility to severe GAS sepsis in collaboration with Dr. David Aronoff at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. o Conducted genome-wide transcriptional profiling of mouse and human cell lines to identify conserved genetic pathways. Deposited data in GeneNetwork to facilitate translational research. -Designed and analyzed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) with multiple collaborators studying differential host response to various diseases. These collaborations resulted in mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with differential response to a number of infectious diseases including the following projects: - Shiga toxin with Dr. Angela Melton-Celsa & Dr. Alison O'Brien - Herpes simplex virus with Dr. Nancy Swatell & Dr. Richard Thompson - Select BSL3 agents - Traumatic injury immune responses in CLP-induced sepsis studies with Dr. Charles Caldwell - Differential response to asthma with Dr. Marsha Karp & Dr. Ian Lewkowich Supervisory Experience -Supervised two technicians for breeding and maintenance of BXD mice strain panel. -Managed mouse colony of recombinant inbred, transgenic and congenic mice, generated an efficient FileMaker Pro mouse colony database. I reduced the number of cages and the increased efficiency of breeding leading to saving in monthly expenses of mouse colony and higher efficiency in use of mice. -Supervised two graduate and three undergraduate students

Dissertation title: Systems biology approach to identifying host interactive pathways modulating the severity of streptococcal sepsis. Advisor: Malak Y. Kotb – Committee: Linda M. Hendershot, Tony N. Marion, David R. Nelson, Robert W. Williams. -Worked towards identifying host immune pathways modulating differential susceptibility to streptococcal sepsis. This was done by applying a systems genetics approach, performing genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and linking phenotypic variation in host responses to variations in genotypes. -Standardized a mouse model of streptococcal sepsis using advanced recombinant inbred (ARI) panel of BXD mouse strains (Aziz et al 2007). These are a genetically diverse reference population that we used to mimic the genetic diversity of human population. -Mapped quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with differential host response to sepsis and parsed them into network of pathways (Abdeltawab et al 2008). -Led teams in my mentor’s laboratory as part of several high-throughput collaborations including: -High-throughput genome-wide transcriptional profiling of mouse spleen across BXD and common inbred mouse strains, completed project was deposited in GeneNetwork online platform February 2010.
